Giving your birds the best possible start

At Wynnstay Humphrey Pullets, we understand how critical it is to give your birds the best possible start.  A healthy and robustly reared pullet will give you the best possible chance of running a profitable poultry business.

One of our poultry specialists will work with you to understand both what you need and the laying environment on your farm.  We will then try to match the conditions in rear to those in your laying house, with particular focus to light, feed and water.

Rearing house preparation

Attention to detail in the pullet rearing process is essential, starting with the preparation of the rearing house.  The pullet rearing houses are thoroughly washed, disinfected and fumigated prior to housing the chicks.

Maintaining bio security of the rearing compartments is vital.  The pullets’ immune system develops over the whole of the rearing period, so the exclusion of infectious agents from the rearing compartments is of paramount importance.

Feed nutrition and water

The quality and composition of poultry feed is crucial, an aspect where Wynnstay Humphrey Feeds & Pullets has a particular advantage.  It is crucial that birds receive the best feed from the initial crumbs through to the pre-lay ration.  We match the nutrition and grists to the birds’ developmental stage to deliver you robust healthy birds with good natural immunity.

Consumption of feed and water are inextricably linked.  Water must be completely clean and without taint.  We test our water comprehensively and clean all water lines regularly during the rearing period and in the period between flocks.

Air temperature and quality

Air quality is closely monitored, in particular levels of carbon dioxide.  Chicks are unable to control their own temperature until they are around 14 days old and therefore it is vital that the pullet rearing house and litter temperature is accurately controlled, ensuring the chicks internal temperature remains between 40 - 41°c.

Lighting

Lighting is closely controlled throughout rear.  Lights will be on for 22 hours on arrival to encourage the chicks to eat and drink.  The light will then be reduced both in duration and intensity over the course of the following weeks to achieve the bird you require which is able to lay the egg profile that you need for your market.

Vaccinations

We will discuss the vaccination strategy with you and your vet, so that your vaccination specific programme equips the bird against the challenges they may experience on your laying farm.  We are keen to ensure that nothing impedes the development of the birds’ healthy gastrointestinal tract, as it is the foundation for achieving a well-developed pullet with robust immunity.

Stockmanship and monitoring

We spend as much time as possible with the chicks so that they become comfortable with our presence in the house.  Just by quietly listening and observing, our rearing staff can tell whether the chicks are behaving normally and that the conditions are right.

Your pullets are monitored regularly, allowing for informed adjustments if required.  We want to keep you informed of your flock’s development and will send weekly data and charts to show the progress.
