In the article James discusses smothering in poultry and provides advice on how to reduce the risk of smothering in flocks, such as blocking off areas where birds tend to congregate, controlling light ingress and measures to keep out predators and wild birds.

Andrew Cardy, a Humphrey Feeds and Pullets customer since he entered the free range egg industry seven years ago, keeps 5,000 birds at his farm in Berkshire. In the article he provides an example of smothering at his farm and the measures he took to minimise the problem. Measures such as boarding off corners of the sheds and keeping Lohmann Brown hens, which have a more calm nature, have meant Andrew has not seen a general smother incident on his farm for more than four years.

Ranger magazine, is the leading authority in free range egg production and is published by the British Free Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA).
